Highlights

Archaeological Site of Mycenae, Epidaurus Theater, Palamidi Castle, Corinth Canal

This excursion will take us to some of the most significant landmarks and attractions of the Peloponnese, starting our morning journey from Athens. Our first stop will be Mycenae, the ancient city in Argolis, which, between 1600 BCE and 1100 BCE, was one of the greatest centers of Greek civilization. It served as a powerful military fortress dominating most of southern Greece, with nearly 36,000 residents at the peak of its glory.

As we gaze upon the Cyclopean walls of the ancient city, we must let our imagination roam freely, as even today, the construction methods remain unexplained. We will visit the archaeological site, the royal tombs, the palace, the Lion Gate, and the museum, where artifacts continue to amaze millions of visitors. Leaving Mycenae behind, we head towards the ancient theater of Epidaurus, renowned as the most beautiful and well-preserved of all ancient theaters. With a capacity of 13,000 spectators, it is divided into two parts: the 21-row seating for the ‘people’ and the lower 34-row seating intended for priests and dignitaries in ancient times. Its remarkable acoustics and excellent condition led to the creation of the Epidaurus Ancient Drama Festival, held annually, hosting prominent Greek and foreign directors and actors.

After this experience, we will proceed to Nafplio, the first capital of the Greek state during the period 1828-1833. We will begin our tour at Palamidi, the impressive fortress constructed in 1687 by the Venetians. Kept in excellent condition, we will walk through its spaces, rumored to have 999 steps (actually 857), and enjoy the panoramic view of the city from above. If time allows, and surely the mood will, we may take a final stroll through the streets of Nafplio to absorb images, performances, and stories of ancient and modern Greece before heading back, making a final stop at the Corinth Canal.
